One IP.LS, for every AI agent, bot and toolkit. Pick your flavor below.

MCP

IP.LS speaks MCP: IP geolocation, ISP and DNS answers as direct tool calls — deterministic, one round-trip, a few hundred tokens per lookup instead of the thousands a web-search path spends. Connect either way below.

Both MCP generations are served here: the current revision 2026-07-28 (stateless, per-request metadata) and the older initialize-handshake revisions back to 2024-11-05. The endpoint picks whichever your client asks for — nothing to configure. Prefer a client on the current revision: on it the skill below is also discoverable over MCP itself.

Agents add MCP servers themselves. Just send the prompt below to your AI agent (Claude Code / Cursor / opencode / Copilot / Cline) — it edits its own MCP configuration, no manual setup needed.

IP.LS is an IP lookup service: free geolocation and DNS records for any IP or domain. Add an MCP server named `ipls-ip-lookup-service` to your own MCP configuration pointing at `https://ip.ls/mcp` (Streamable HTTP — use your client's transport type: `http` for mcpServers-style configs, `remote` for opencode). Do it yourself (edit your config file or run the equivalent CLI add command), then tell the user to restart the app for it to take effect.

Non-agent clients (e.g. Claude Desktop) cannot add servers themselves — paste this into your MCP config:

{ "mcpServers": { "ipls-ip-lookup-service": { "type": "http", "url": "https://ip.ls/mcp" } } }

Skill

Zero-config route when MCP is not an option: two skills — one for looking up IPs and domains, one for summarizing the IP column of a web log. Each teaches the agent when to use it and how to read results.

Agents install skills themselves. Just send the prompt below to your AI agent (opencode / Claude Code / Cline / any skills-capable client) — it fetches both files and creates its own SKILL.md directories, no manual setup needed.

IP.LS publishes two zero-config skills for any skills-capable agent: `ipls-ip-lookup-service` (look up any IP or domain — geolocation, ASN, timezone, DNS records) and `analyzing-web-logs-with-ipls` (summarize the IP column of a web log into country / ASN / network distributions). Install both yourself — for each, fetch the file and save it as `SKILL.md` in a directory named after the skill (the `name` in its frontmatter):
  https://ip.ls/skill.md     -> ipls-ip-lookup-service/
  https://ip.ls/skill-log.md -> analyzing-web-logs-with-ipls/
Place those directories where your client keeps skills — e.g. `.opencode/skills/` (project) or `~/.config/opencode/skills/` (global) for opencode, `~/.claude/skills/` for Claude Code — or wherever your platform expects agent skills. Do it yourself, then tell the user both are ready.

What Is an IP Address & How IP Lookup Works

Every device connected to the internet has a public IP address — a unique numeric label in IPv4 (e.g. 8.8.8.8) or IPv6 (e.g. 2606:4700:4700::1111) form. Your public IP is what remote servers see when you connect, and it carries a rough geolocation based on the IP block assigned to your ISP or hosting provider.

An IP lookup resolves an address or domain to its city, region, country, ISP/ASN, timezone and continent. It is commonly used to verify your own address, debug network issues, check VPN/proxy detection, or look up the origin of a suspicious connection. IP.LS serves both humans and machines: the browser shows a live report for your own IP, while curl ip.ls and the JSON API return the same data for scripting.
